Drive-in pallet racking is just one of the options you have for pallet racking systems. While it’s not the most popular warehouse equipment that we sell for pallet racking (that honor belongs to selective pallet racking), drive-in or drive-through racking can be an excellent choice for the right warehouse. Could it be the right one for yours? Learn more about this unique pallet racking system and discover two situations where we’d highly recommend the use of this system.

What Is Drive-In Pallet Racking?

Drive-in pallet racking gets its name because of the fact that forklifts are used to load the system, so it leaves room for the forklifts to drive into the system to load product. This system is one of the few in the warehouse environment that uses a “first in, last out” process instead of a more common “first in, first out” process. Warehouses that use this pallet racking system can utilize a narrow aisle set-up, too, since you won’t need much room to get your forklift in and out safely. This can maximize the storage capacity of your warehouse since you won’t need to leave nearly as much room for access aisles.

What Situations Are Right for Drive-In Pallet Racking?

While these two examples are by no means exhaustive, they are two of the most common warehousing situations where our team would recommend the use of drive-in pallet racks.

  1. Your warehouse contains a small number of SKUs.
Drive-in pallet racking offers very high-density storage, but it’s ideally used for situations where you have a small number of SKUs in a high volume. You’ll be stacking pallets of the same SKU in front of each other, so you’ll want to group inventory together. It’s most efficient if they are all the same product and it doesn’t matter which container is sold first.
  2. You have slow moving SKUs.
If you have a number of SKUs that aren’t ordered very often but you need to keep on hand, drive-in racking might be ideal. It maximizes your storage space so you aren’t devoting any more of your precious warehouse space to a product that might not justify the expense.

We highly recommend drive-in pallet racking for items that need to be temperature controlled. That’s because they offer the highest density of storage so it can cut down on the expense of heating or cooling the area.

Should You Use Drive In Pallet Racking?

It really depends on a number of important factors, including how much inventory you carry, how many SKUs you have, and how quickly those items are selling. However, our team can help you make that determination and decide whether or not drive in pallet racking is right for your space. If it is, we’ll place an order for the right system at a great price and have it delivered to your location. We can even have a team do the assembly for you so you are assured that’s it has been done correctly.
