Our warehouse consultants love to help warehouses and distribution centers find solutions to their toughest challenges. It’s what we’ve been doing for more than 25 years and it’s what we plan on doing for at least 25 more. We document many of our warehouse improvement projects in the Case Studies section of our website. This is a great place to read more about what our warehouse consultants can do for your warehouse and how we’ve helped others overcome their warehousing challenges. Check it out and see if there is a case study that inspires you about improving your warehouse!

One of our favorite case studies comes from a film production company. When they approached the RMH Systems team for help, they were running out of space in their warehouse but didn’t want to move or expand their facility. They also had the additional challenge of needing to improve their product flow despite an ever-changing inventory. Our warehouse consultants carefully evaluated their needs and situation and then developed a workable plan. They knew exactly what to do!

How Our Warehouse Consultants Optimized the Warehouse Layout

First, our team looked at the current layout of the warehouse in order to determine if it was the best use of the space for what the company needed to do. We determined that the warehouse would be better laid out if it was turned 180 degrees; so that’s what we did. We worked with the company to complete the transition in a phased approach. This allowed them to continue working on their projects without a complete shutdown of their workflow while we gradually made the shift in their warehouse.

Of course, it took more than moving racks around. They needed new racks and their fire suppression system needed to be updated. We worked with local contractors to make this happen and ensure the warehouse was totally up-to-date on fire codes.

During the work, we discovered that a lot of the pallet racking used in the warehouse was damaged and needed to be replaced. We worked with the company to select replacement racking that would suit their needs and work with their other existing equipment. This helped the company save money where they could while upgrading their racking to a system that should work for them for years to come.

The Results of Our Work

In the end, our team helped this film production company increase their pallet positions from 7,900 to 11,900. That’s an additional four thousand pallets they could store in their warehouse without an expensive expansion or moving their facility. We used drive-in racking, selective racking and wire decking along with our project management services to get it all done.

Additionally, the change in the orientation of the warehouse and the improvement in their layout helped make the warehouse much more productive. The team will be able to fulfill orders and requests in a shorter amount of time, increasing productivity for the entire operation.

That’s a success story that any warehouse manager would be proud of!
